Ghanaian Paralympian Raphael Botsyo Nkegbe has bemoaned about the consistent neglect of other sporting activities in Ghana including the Para – Athletics Association of Ghana.
Botsyo Nkegbe, has called on the various stakeholders to look into other sporting activities with the same attention it has been given to the football business in Ghana.
He said as the first Para – Athlete to qualify to the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, his preparation to the qualification has been borne by himself. According to the senior Para- Paralympian, his qualification budget presented to the association is unattended to.
”Sometimes you feel bad as para-athlete or disabled sports athletes due to the kind of treatment we go through in the country.” Nkegbe to Space Fm 87.7 – Sunyani.
”I am the first Para-Athlete to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics games. I catered for myself and the $8000 I spent on my qualification sent to the FA, I am yet to hear from them.”
Botsyo Nkegbe, expressed worry about the government’s inability to support lesser sporting events in the country. The government excuses to cater for travelling expenses of Para- Athletes and no qualification bonus to other sporting activities at events become very worrying.
”If you have a family among ten athletes that are denied the opportunity to represent their country at tournament after qualifying because of inability to pay for travelling expenses of $5000, you will definitely sympathize.
’Footballers are paid qualification bonus at tournaments and receives a bonus for qualifying to every stage of the competition but other sporting activities are denied such motivation.
’I am not saying we should pay attention to football, I am an ardent fan of Hearts of Oak but other sporting groups deserve better.” He stressed.
